Caribbean Carnival Costumes
One of my favorite assignments for Caribbean Life each year is helping to cover the 5-day long West Indian American Day Carnival and Parade, held over Labor Day Weekend in Brooklyn, NY.
The festival always kicks off on Thursday night behind the Brooklyn Museum with fabulous calypso singers, rollicking adult humor, and - my favorite - an absolutely breathtaking extravaganza of carnival costumes that will light up Eastern Parkway come Labor Day. Framed by the beautiful dark of night and highlighted by intense light, one by one the kings and queens and the male and female characters of about twenty mas camps (organizations that choose a new theme and then design original costumes) take to the stage to display these stunning creations.
Some of the most internationally renowned mas camps whose costumes are shown here are Antoine International, D Midas and Associates, Genesis International, Hawks International, Mas Production Unlimited, The Promise/XTC, Sesame Flyers International, United Front International, and Utica Boys International.

Empire State Building
Sitting at my desk, pounding out my articles on my computer, the Empire State Building is my constant companion - except when it disappears behind a fog, as it occasionally does, leaving me desolate.
When something particularly dramatic happens I sometimes leap up, dive for my camera, run to the window and get the shot as best I can. Therefore, I have to ask you to please excuse the slight crookedness of some of the photos. They were all taken quite informally - not because I planned to do anything with them, but because I couldn't resist taking these portraits of my friend.
